Why Most Civilizations Fail
Two islands, both isolated, both harsh. One collapsed into cannibalism and extinction. The other built one of the world’s oldest democracies and survived catastrophes for a millennium. The difference between Easter Island and Iceland can’t be explained by geography alone, and the answer determines whether we see human beings as prisoners of their environment or as problem-solvers who transform any landscape into a foundation for flourishing. The explanation we accept shapes the policies we pursue, the innovations we attempt, and the future we believe is possible.
The Geographic Explanation
Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel won a Pulitzer for answering a question posed by a New Guinean politician named Yali: why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own? Diamond’s answer demolished racist explanations by demonstrating that geography, not genetics, determined which societies flourished. The east-west axis of Eurasia allowed crops and domesticated animals to spread easily across similar climates, while Africa and the Americas, with north-south axes, faced climatic barriers that slowed diffusion. Eurasia’s advantages compounded: domesticable plants like wheat, barley, and rice produced food surpluses; domesticable animals like horses, cattle, and pigs enabled transport, plowing, and protein; dense populations near livestock bred deadly germs that conferred immunity to Eurasians but devastated isolated populations during conquest.
The result was that Eurasians developed guns, steel weapons, and innovations that allowed them to dominate societies without those advantages. Diamond’s framework replaces vague cultural explanations with concrete environmental factors, showing how contingencies of geography—wheat versus cassava, horses versus llamas—shaped historical trajectories. It explains why the conquistadors sailed east across the Atlantic instead of Inca fleets sailing west to conquer Spain, and why smallpox killed millions of Native Americans while European diseases barely dented Eurasian populations. Environment shapes possibility, and of course societies with better starting conditions succeeded.
But geography doesn’t explain everything.
Easter Island
Easter Island’s story has become the archetype for environmental catastrophe. Polynesian settlers arrived around 1200 AD to find a lush subtropical island where forests dominated and palm trees soared 80 feet high. The population grew, and then it all fell apart. By the time Europeans arrived in 1722, the island was barren, the forests were gone, and the population had crashed from an estimated peak of 15,000 to perhaps 2,000. Archaeological evidence suggests warfare, possible cannibalism, and societal collapse. The famous moai statues had been toppled, many deliberately destroyed.
The standard explanation blames resource depletion: the islanders cut trees faster than they regrew, using logs to transport the moai, to build canoes, to fuel fires. Deforestation caused soil erosion, crop yields declined, and without trees for canoes, they couldn’t fish effectively. Famine set in, the population crashed, and violence erupted. Diamond uses Easter Island as a warning that isolation plus finite resources equals inevitable collapse. The island became a closed system, and when resources ran out, the people starved. Geography trapped them; the Pacific prevented escape or resupply, making them passengers on a doomed vessel.
The lesson is fatalistic: human ingenuity can’t overcome environmental limits, and if you exceed your carrying capacity, you die.
Iceland
Norse settlers arrived around 870 AD to a volcanic wasteland where the climate was harsher than Easter Island’s—subarctic winds, minimal winter sunlight, volcanic eruptions, frequent earthquakes. The soil was thin. Trees were sparse, and within decades of settlement nearly all were cut for fuel and construction. Traditional European crops couldn’t grow; wheat failed and barley barely survived. If geography determines outcomes, Iceland should have collapsed faster than Easter Island.
It didn’t.
Instead, Icelanders built the Althing in 930 AD—one of the world’s oldest parliaments—and developed a literate culture that produced the Sagas, epic prose narratives that preserved Norse mythology and history. They maintained trade networks despite isolation, exporting wool and fish to Norway in exchange for grain and goods. They survived volcanic eruptions, famines, plagues, and political subjugation. The Althing wasn’t symbolic; it functioned as a legal assembly where disputes were adjudicated, laws were debated, and alliances were forged, with chieftains gathering annually at Thingvellir and bringing their disputes before a council of judges.
The system prevented blood feuds from spiraling into societal collapse.
The Sagas served a parallel function, not as mere entertainment but as encoded repositories of legal precedents, genealogies, property claims, and cultural values. Literacy wasn’t reserved for an elite priesthood—Icelanders cultivated widespread literacy among freemen, enabling knowledge transfer across generations. When catastrophe struck, the cultural memory survived because it was written down and distributed.
In 1402, plague arrived, likely pneumonic, which kills virtually everyone infected. Mortality estimates range from 30% to 60% of the population. Farms were abandoned and entire communities vanished. The Bishop’s Annals record the horror: “Many farms were devastated, and on most farms only three or two survived, sometimes children, usually two or mostly three, and some of them yearlings, and some sucking their dead mothers.”
A second plague struck in 1494, killing 30 to 50% of the population. Then came the Laki eruption in 1783, one of the most catastrophic volcanic events in recorded history. For eight months, the Laki fissure spewed lava and gases across southern Iceland while hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide poisoned the soil, causing crops to fail and killing 50% of cattle and 80% of sheep. Famine killed 20% of the human population. Iceland’s challenges exceeded Easter Island’s: a harsher climate, fewer resources, and repeated catastrophes on a scale Easter Island never faced.
Iceland should have been the textbook collapse.
But it recovered. Every time.
After the plagues, Iceland rebuilt. After Laki, despite losing one-fifth of its population and most of its livestock, the society stabilized within a decade. By 1801, births exceeded deaths and population growth resumed. Iceland didn’t just survive—it preserved its culture, maintained its institutions, and became one of the most prosperous nations per capita in the world.
What did Iceland have that Easter Island lacked?
The Limits of the Geographic Lens
Diamond’s framework explains why Iceland faced harsher conditions than Easter Island, why both societies struggled with resource constraints, and the proximate causes: deforestation on Easter Island, volcanic eruptions in Iceland, plague mortality in both. It doesn’t explain divergence. Why did one collapse and the other endure, when the environmental variables don’t favor Iceland? Easter Island had better climate, more arable land, and fewer catastrophic disruptions. If determinism held, Easter Island should have thrived while Iceland collapsed.
The opposite happened.
Diamond emphasizes domesticable animals, noting that Eurasia had horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep while the Americas had llamas and alpacas in the Andes. He argues that llamas were inferior—smaller, less useful for transport, unable to pull plows. But this raises a question: why didn’t South American civilizations fully exploit llamas the way Eurasians exploited horses, when the animals were there and the potential existed? Horses started as wild, small, skittish animals that humans bred, trained, and developed harnesses and saddles and techniques for using in agriculture and warfare, through a process that took ingenuity, not just proximity to the right species.
Llamas could have been bred for size, strength, and temperament. They could have been used more extensively for transport and agriculture. The resources existed, but the knowledge didn’t spread. Diamond’s answer points back to geography—the north-south axis slowed diffusion, climatic barriers prevented innovation from spreading—but that doesn’t explain why some societies innovate within constraints and others stagnate.
Easter Island and Iceland shatter the deterministic model. Both were isolated, both faced resource limits, both endured catastrophes, and one died and one thrived. Geography can’t explain the difference.
The Variable That Matters
The difference wasn’t the environment. It was culture. Iceland maintained trade despite isolation, and when plague killed half the population, survivors reorganized rather than fragmenting. When Laki destroyed crops and livestock, Icelanders relied on coastal fishing communities, rationed grain, and accepted aid from Denmark—grudgingly and inefficiently, but enough to prevent collapse. The adaptation was concrete: after Laki, Icelanders shifted to fishing along the coast where the eruption’s effects were minimal, traded wool for grain despite livestock losses, reorganized land holdings to concentrate remaining resources, and maintained the Althing even when starvation loomed, using legal mechanisms to distribute aid and settle disputes over scarce resources. The institutions bent but didn’t break, and this wasn’t accidental. The culture prized survival and adaptability.
The Sagas are filled with heroes who survive through cleverness, not just strength. Egil Skallagrimsson earns fame for composing poetry that saves his life, for navigating political intrigues, for adapting to changing circumstances. The cultural heroes embodied the values the society needed to survive: flexibility, intelligence, willingness to change strategies when conditions shifted.
Easter Island didn’t adapt. When the forests disappeared, the islanders kept cutting. When crop yields declined, they didn’t shift strategies. When population exceeded sustainable limits, they built more moai instead of conserving resources. Statue-building competitions between clans intensified as resources became scarce—exactly the opposite of rational adaptation—because the moai weren’t religious monuments alone but representations of clan prestige. Each clan competed to erect larger, more elaborate statues than their rivals, and transporting a 14-ton statue required hundreds of workers, miles of rope, and trees to roll the moai across the island. As forests thinned, the clans didn’t stop. They escalated: larger moai, longer transport routes, more trees cut, more labor diverted from farming and fishing.
The last trees were cut when everyone could see the catastrophe coming, but no clan could afford to stop building while rivals continued. The prestige system locked them into collective suicide.
The individual who cut the last tree wasn’t stupid. He was trapped in a cultural framework where status mattered more than survival.
The difference wasn’t resources but willingness to change behavior in response to evidence. Iceland had a culture that valued literacy, trade, legal institutions, and adaptive problem-solving. The Sagas celebrated cleverness and resilience rather than just martial prowess. The Althing provided a forum for dispute resolution that prevented clan warfare from destroying society, and literacy enabled knowledge transfer across generations. Trade networks meant Iceland wasn’t truly isolated, so when famine struck, Norwegian merchants brought grain; when plague decimated the population, survivors inherited land and consolidated holdings rather than fragmenting into warring factions; and the legal system provided mechanisms for property transfer, debt settlement, and dispute resolution that maintained social cohesion through catastrophe.
Compare Easter Island, where no trade networks existed and Pacific isolation was absolute, where no legal institutions mediated disputes between clans, and where prestige came from monument-building rather than from problem-solving or resource management. When resources became scarce, the culture had no mechanism to shift course, because the only status available came from the same activities that were destroying the island. Cutting the last tree wasn’t irrational in that cultural framework. It was necessary to maintain status. The society locked into a system that couldn’t adapt.
Geography provided the constraints, but culture determined whether societies solved the problems those constraints created.
The Mechanisms of Cultural Survival
The difference reveals itself in specific mechanisms, not vague cultural superiority.
Iceland had institutional redundancy. When farming failed, fishing sustained the population; when trade with Norway stalled, local production compensated; when plague killed half the population, legal mechanisms for property consolidation prevented fragmentation. Multiple systems provided multiple paths to survival. Easter Island had a single-point failure: the moai culture required trees, and when the forests disappeared, the entire status system collapsed. No alternative source of prestige existed and no institutional mechanisms channeled competition into productive rather than destructive activities. The culture was fragile because it depended on a resource that could be exhausted.
Iceland had external connections. Trade meant access to grain when local crops failed, Norwegian merchants brought news and technology, and the Althing’s structure was influenced by Norse legal traditions imported from Scandinavia. External knowledge supplemented local adaptation. Easter Island had none. Isolation meant no external ideas, no trade, no rescue. The Polynesians who settled the island arrived with sophisticated navigation and seafaring traditions, but after settlement, those traditions atrophied, so that by the time Europeans arrived, the islanders had forgotten how to build ocean-going canoes. The knowledge was lost because nothing reinforced its use.
Iceland had literacy. Written records preserved knowledge across generations—legal precedents, farming techniques, genealogies, stories—all surviving catastrophes because they were recorded, so each generation didn’t have to rediscover what previous generations learned. Easter Island had oral tradition, where knowledge survived only as long as the people who held it, so that when plague or famine killed the elders, the knowledge died with them. The rongorongo script remains undeciphered because the people who could read it were dead before anyone recorded how it worked.
These aren’t accidents of geography. They’re choices. Societies chose to maintain trade or isolate, to build institutions that channeled competition productively or destructively, to preserve knowledge through writing or rely on memory, to create redundancy or concentrate all status in a single exhaustible resource. Geography shaped the difficulty of those choices. It didn’t determine the outcomes.
The Question We Avoid
If geography determines outcomes, then human beings are passengers—victims or beneficiaries of environmental luck. Policies focus on redistribution, on compensating those born in unfavorable locations for accidents of geography. Innovation becomes secondary to managing finite resources, and progress becomes zero-sum. If ideas determine outcomes, then human beings are agents. Policies focus on creating conditions where innovation thrives and knowledge spreads and adaptive cultures outcompete static ones. Resources become problems to solve rather than limits to accept, and progress becomes infinite. The choice between these frameworks shapes how we respond to every challenge from climate change to economic inequality.
Diamond’s geographic determinism offers absolution. Societies failed because they drew a bad hand, no one is responsible, and outcomes were inevitable. But that erases the most important variable: human agency. It ignores the Icelanders who chose to trade rather than isolate, to fish when farming failed, to rebuild after plagues that would have destroyed less resilient cultures. It ignores the Easter Islanders who chose prestige competition over survival and cut the last tree despite knowing it doomed them.
Those choices mattered. Culture mattered. Ideas mattered.
Geography shaped the stage, but ideas wrote the script.
The Primacy of Explanations
David Deutsch is a quantum physicist who pioneered quantum computing, and his 2011 book The Beginning of Infinity builds a sweeping theory of knowledge creation, progress, and human potential. At its core is a simple claim: good explanations drive everything. A good explanation is one that is hard to vary while still accounting for the phenomenon it addresses. Change the details and the explanation fails. Bad explanations can explain anything and therefore explain nothing.
Ancient creation myths are bad explanations because they attribute the universe to gods or supernatural forces that can be adjusted to fit any observation. If the sun rises, the god is pleased; if it doesn’t, the god is angry. The explanation accommodates any outcome by varying the god’s mood. The Big Bang theory is a good explanation because it makes specific predictions about cosmic microwave background radiation, the abundance of light elements, and the expansion of space, and altering the theory’s details causes those predictions to fail. You can’t adjust the Big Bang to explain a static universe or a contracting one without destroying the theory entirely.
This distinction matters for history as much as physics. Bad historical explanations accommodate any outcome by varying their details. Good historical explanations make specific claims that can be tested against evidence. Good explanations have reach—they extrapolate beyond the observations that inspired them. Newton’s laws of motion explained falling apples and predicted planetary orbits. Einstein’s general relativity explained Mercury’s orbit and predicted gravitational lensing, which wasn’t observed until years later. The better the explanation, the farther it reaches.
Progress happens when we create new knowledge through conjecture and criticism. We guess solutions to problems, test those guesses, criticize them, and refine or reject them. The process is infinite because every solution creates new problems. This is the beginning of infinity—not that progress is endless, but that the capacity to solve problems through knowledge creation has no inherent limit. This framework, inherited from Karl Popper, explains why the Enlightenment mattered: it wasn’t a collection of specific inventions or discoveries but the creation of a culture that valued criticism, questioned authority, and expected knowledge to grow.
Apply this to history and Diamond’s biogeographical determinism collapses.
The Just-So Story Problem
Diamond’s framework suffers from what Deutsch calls just-so stories—explanations that seem plausible but can be easily varied to explain opposite outcomes.
Consider the llamas again. Diamond argues that Andean civilizations couldn’t fully exploit llamas because the animals were smaller and less useful than Eurasian horses, with geography limiting what they could do. Deutsch points out that this is circular. Horses weren’t always useful. They started as wild, small, skittish animals that humans bred for size, strength, and temperament while developing harnesses, saddles, and techniques for using horses in agriculture and warfare.
The just-so nature becomes clear when you flip the scenario. If Andean civilizations had domesticated llamas extensively and used them to build empires that rivaled Eurasia, Diamond could have told a different story about how the llama’s adaptation to high altitude gave Andean civilizations a unique advantage, since no other domesticable animal could thrive in such harsh terrain. Both stories sound plausible and both invoke geography, and they’re fundamentally empty because they can explain any outcome.
That’s a bad explanation.
The same flaw appears in Diamond’s treatment of the Pacific, where he points to the ocean as a barrier that prevented contact between civilizations. Polynesians overcame that barrier through sophisticated navigation and seafaring, settling islands thousands of miles apart using techniques so advanced that Europeans couldn’t replicate them for centuries. If Polynesians hadn’t developed those skills, Diamond could have invoked the Pacific as an ultimate geographic barrier that prevented settlement. Since they did develop them, the story becomes about how certain environments demanded innovation. The explanation adjusts to fit the outcome.
This is the core problem with biogeographical determinism. It treats geography as an independent variable that causes outcomes, but geography only matters after someone has an idea for how to exploit or overcome it. Without the idea, mountains are barriers; with the idea, they’re defensible positions or trade routes. Without the idea, oceans isolate; with the idea, they’re highways. The primeval distribution of horses or llamas or flint or uranium affects only the details, and only after someone has an idea for how to use them. Ideas determine which biogeographical factors matter and what effects they have.
Diamond has it backwards.
Prophecy Versus Prediction
Deutsch distinguishes between prediction and prophecy. Predictions are rational forecasts based on present knowledge. Prophecies purport to know things that cannot be known, because they ignore the growth of knowledge.
Paul Ehrlich’s 1968 book The Population Bomb was a prophecy, predicting mass famines within a decade, hundreds of millions of deaths, and civilizational collapse. None of it happened, because his forecast assumed that agricultural productivity, food distribution, and population growth would remain static. He didn’t account for the Green Revolution, which dramatically increased crop yields through new varieties, irrigation, and fertilizers. He couldn’t account for it, because the knowledge hadn’t been created yet.
Prophecy says: if we stop solving problems, we’re doomed. That is trivially true. The question is whether we will stop. Diamond’s biogeographical determinism is prophecy dressed as science. These societies failed because they lacked the right geography while others succeeded because they had it, with the implicit forecast that without favorable geography, societies can’t escape poverty or stagnation. This ignores knowledge creation and treats human societies as static entities responding mechanically to environmental stimuli.
Iceland proves the prophecy false. The geography was terrible, the catastrophes were overwhelming, and the society survived and eventually thrived because it created knowledge—legal institutions, trade networks, literacy, adaptive strategies. That knowledge didn’t come from biogeography. It came from humans solving problems. The difference between prophecy and prediction is the difference between fatalism and agency: prophecy says your fate is sealed by forces beyond your control, while prediction says you can change outcomes by creating new knowledge.
The Spaceship Earth Trap
Diamond’s framework aligns with the Spaceship Earth metaphor, popularized by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s, which portrays Earth as a closed vessel with finite resources where we’re passengers on a lifeboat and our survival depends on rationing what we have because there’s nowhere else to go. The metaphor is seductive—it feels responsible, cautious, realistic—and it’s wrong.
Earth isn’t a spaceship equipped with everything we need. It’s actively hostile, and without knowledge, humans die from cold, heat, predators, disease, and starvation. The resources we extract from Earth—oil, metals, food—aren’t readymade gifts but creations of knowledge. Oil was useless until we figured out how to refine it, transport it, and convert it into energy. Iron ore was rocks until we learned to smelt it. Uranium was just heavy metal until we understood nuclear fission. Resources aren’t discovered. They’re invented, and the limiting factor is knowledge, not stuff.
This destroys the Spaceship Earth framework. If resources are finite and fixed, then consumption leads inevitably to depletion and collapse, and sustainability means maintaining equilibrium—using only what regenerates naturally, never exceeding carrying capacity. This is what environmentalists mean when they invoke Easter Island as a warning: the islanders exceeded their carrying capacity and collapsed, and we’re doing the same on a global scale. The analogy is exactly wrong. Easter Island’s population didn’t collapse because it ran out of trees. It collapsed because they couldn’t generate the knowledge needed to solve the tree problem.
They could have planted new trees, built ocean-going canoes to trade with other islands or relocate, or shifted from prestige competition through statue-building to resource management. The knowledge required for those solutions existed elsewhere in the world but didn’t reach Easter Island, or was rejected when it did. The failure wasn’t environmental but epistemological. The society was static and couldn’t adapt, so when faced with a novel problem, it kept doing what it had always done until the system collapsed.
Iceland faced worse environmental conditions, and Icelanders created knowledge—fishing techniques, trade routes, legal institutions, literacy. When Laki poisoned the soil and killed the livestock, they adapted by shifting to fishing, reorganizing land holdings, and accepting external aid. They survived because they could solve problems faster than new problems emerged. The Spaceship Earth metaphor treats sustainability as maintaining things as they are, which is what static societies do by suppressing change, enforcing tradition, and punishing innovation. That’s what sustainable meant on Easter Island: keep building moai, keep cutting trees, maintain the status hierarchy. The society sustained its culture right into extinction.
Dynamic societies are unsustainable by that definition. They consume resources at rates that seem reckless, transform environments, and disrupt ecosystems, and they survive catastrophes that destroy static societies because they create knowledge. The British Isles were once covered in vast forests that provided sustainable resources for millennia, and then the population grew and the forests disappeared. If biogeographical determinism held, Britain would have collapsed like Easter Island. Instead the British developed coal mining, trade networks, agriculture, and eventually industrial technologies that made them wealthier and more populous than ever.
Britain didn’t sustain its forest economy. It abandoned it. The society was dynamic enough to create new knowledge when old resources ran out: coal replaced wood, oil replaced coal, and nuclear and renewable energy might someday replace oil. Each transition seemed unsustainable at the time, and each required creating knowledge that didn’t exist when the previous resource began depleting. Britain became unsustainable and thrived. Easter Island remained sustainable and died.
The Dehumanizing Framework
Deutsch calls Diamond’s biogeographical determinism dehumanizing because it reduces human beings to passive recipients of environmental fortune and treats ideas as epiphenomena, surface decorations on deeper material causes. Ideas are the ultimate causation. Geography matters only insofar as it creates problems that humans must solve with ideas, and the same environment can lead to radically different outcomes depending on whether the society generates good explanations or bad ones.
Athens and Sparta shared similar geography, and one became the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and rational inquiry while the other became a militaristic state that suppressed innovation.
The difference wasn’t location. It was culture.
Both city-states faced the same Mediterranean climate, similar agricultural constraints, and access to the same trade routes. Both were Greek-speaking, shared cultural roots, and worshiped similar gods, and their trajectories diverged completely. Athens developed institutions that protected dissent. The Assembly allowed citizens to debate policy, philosophers questioned everything from physics to ethics without fear of execution, usually, and the culture rewarded cleverness, rhetoric, and innovation. This openness enabled Athens to generate knowledge that transformed civilization: democracy, logic, geometry, drama, history as rational inquiry rather than mythology.
Sparta built a society designed to prevent change, raising children communally to enforce conformity, discouraging innovation, and restricting trade and commerce while optimizing for military prowess and social stability. It succeeded at both for centuries and it also stagnated, so when Sparta eventually fell, it left almost nothing behind except cautionary tales about what happens when you suppress knowledge creation.
Geography didn’t determine these outcomes. Ideas did.
The Renaissance occurred in Italian city-states with no particular geographic advantages. It happened because those cities developed cultures that valued art, scholarship, trade, and competition. Florence wasn’t blessed with special resources or favorable terrain but with wealth from trade, competition between powerful families that patronized artists and thinkers, and relative freedom from centralized authority. The Renaissance could have happened anywhere with similar cultural conditions. It happened in Italy because Italian cities created those conditions first.
The Enlightenment began in Europe, not because European geography was unique, but because European culture—after centuries of wars, plagues, and upheavals—stumbled into institutions that protected criticism and rewarded innovation. The printing press enabled rapid knowledge diffusion, universities provided spaces for debate, the Reformation shattered religious uniformity and forced tolerance of dissent, and scientific societies formalized criticism and experimentation. None of this required specific geography. It required specific ideas about how to organize society and pursue knowledge.
These turning points can’t be explained by geography. They require understanding ideas, culture, institutions, and the willingness to question authority. Reducing them to maps and animals and axes of continental drift erases the only variable that matters: human creativity.
Diamond deserves credit for demolishing racist explanations for historical inequality, showing how environmental factors influenced development, and providing a materialist framework that replaced lazy cultural stereotypes. But he went too far. By elevating geography to determinism, he created a new fatalism: if your ancestors drew the wrong continent, your civilization was doomed, and if they drew the right one, success was inevitable. This removes agency, treats progress as luck, and offers no path forward except accepting your geographic fate or redistributing resources from the lucky to the unlucky.
Diamond’s framework is a good explanation of proximate causes. Why did Eurasians have guns, steel, and horses when Native Americans didn’t? Geography explains part of it. Ultimate causation lies in ideas: why did some societies exploit their geographic advantages and others didn’t, and why did some overcome geographic disadvantages? Geography can’t answer those questions. Knowledge creation can.
Static Societies
If ideas drive progress, what determines which societies generate good ideas and which don’t?
Static societies dominate human history. For most of the past several thousand years, people lived the same lives as their grandparents, who lived the same lives as theirs. Change was rare, innovation punished, tradition sacred. Easter Island was a static society, as was feudal Europe and countless civilizations that rose and fell without leaving much trace because they never escaped the cycle of stasis and collapse. Because I say so is an anti-rational meme, as is it never did me any harm and this is how we’ve always done it. These phrases stop inquiry, prevent the criticism needed to improve ideas, and enforce conformity. Static societies must suppress creativity to survive, because if people started questioning traditions, generating new ideas, and experimenting with alternatives, the entire structure would collapse. These societies develop sophisticated mechanisms to crush innovation before it emerges.
The primary method isn’t enforcing the status quo after new ideas appear—that’s just mopping up—but disabling the source of new ideas: human creativity. Static societies raise children in ways that extinguish their critical faculties by teaching obedience over inquiry, punishing questions, and valorizing conformity. From the child’s perspective, this is catastrophic. Every human is born with creativity—the drive to understand, to solve problems, to make things better—and static societies systematically destroy that drive, breaking spirits and creating populations incapable of imagining alternatives to the traditions they enact.
Here’s the paradox: creativity can’t be fully extinguished, because if it were, the society would freeze completely and collapse at the first novel problem. So static societies channel the remaining creativity into a perverse direction: exceptional conformity, where status comes from enacting traditions more faithfully than others. The person who cuts their hair exactly right, who performs rituals with perfect precision, who never deviates from expectations—that person gains status. Innovation lowers status and conformity raises it.
This is the trap Easter Island fell into. Dynamic Societies

The Enlightenment created the first stable dynamic society, not as a collection of inventions but as the creation of institutions that protected dissent, valued evidence over authority, and expected progress. The scientific method is a rational meme that replicates because it solves problems. Universities that protect academic freedom are rational institutions that survive because they generate knowledge. Markets that reward innovation are rational mechanisms that thrive because they enable problem-solving.
In dynamic societies, status comes from creation, not conformity. The person who invents a better mousetrap, who questions an accepted theory, who finds a new solution gains status. Progress isn’t endless in the sense that it happens automatically, but it’s infinite in the sense that there’s no inherent limit to problem-solving through knowledge creation. Every solution enables new possibilities, every problem solved creates new problems worth solving, and the process can continue as long as societies maintain the institutions that enable criticism and innovation. The transition from static to dynamic is fragile. Western civilization is still in that transition, anti-rational memes persist, subcultures suppress criticism, and institutions enforce conformity.
The battle isn’t over.
Anti-Rational Memes in Modern Society
Deutsch warns that dynamic societies can contain anti-rational subcultures—not primitive holdovers but modern movements that replicate by disabling criticism. Anything that says because I say so is suspect. Anything that forbids questioning is suspect. Anything that punishes dissent to protect an idea from criticism is anti-rational.
Wokeness operates this way. Certain thoughts become taboo, asking questions signals racism or sexism, and disagreement proves fragility. The framework immunizes itself from criticism by pathologizing critics, which is textbook anti-rational memetics: the idea survives by disabling the holder’s ability to evaluate it. The Spaceship Earth model treats sustainability as maintaining equilibrium by reducing consumption and living within our means, which is static-society thinking that assumes resources are fixed and knowledge won’t grow. The dynamic alternative recognizes that resources are created through knowledge, with energy sources becoming more efficiently utilized and then transitioning or diversifying as we invent better ones: wood to coal to oil to nuclear to solar. Each seemed limited until we created knowledge that made the next viable. The solution to resource constraints isn’t rationing but creating knowledge that makes new resources accessible.
Consider the history. In the 1800s, whale oil lit lamps across America and Europe, and whaling seemed unsustainable as whale populations collapsed. The static response would have been to ration whale oil, limit lighting, and return to darkness. The dynamic response was to invent kerosene refining from petroleum, and whale oil demand collapsed—not from regulation but from innovation. Today, climate catastrophism follows the same pattern by assuming energy sources are fixed and carbon emissions are locked in. Nuclear energy solved the alleged carbon problem decades ago. France gets 70% of its electricity from nuclear power with minimal carbon emissions. The technology works, and we didn’t deploy it because anti-rational memes—irrational fear of radiation, precautionary principle run amok, NIMBY activism—prevented rational assessment.
The failure wasn’t technical but cultural. Static-society thinking treats nuclear as too risky to attempt. Immigration and culture. Not all cultures are equally conducive to knowledge creation. The second and third generations grow up in static subcultures, not dynamic societies. The solution isn’t ethnic quotas but cultural selection: favor immigrants who demonstrate commitment to dynamic-society values—evidence over authority, individual rights over collective conformity, criticism over deference—and reject immigrants who actively oppose these values by demanding censorship, enforcing communal conformity, or punishing apostates and dissidents within their own communities.
Assimilation means adopting the values that make dynamic societies work, and immigration policy should prioritize people who embrace these values and reject those who actively oppose them. This is controversial precisely because anti-rational memes have captured large parts of immigration discourse, where the idea that cultures differ in their compatibility with dynamic societies is labeled racist and the suggestion that immigrants should adopt Western values is called cultural imperialism. Infinite Future or Static Trap

It depends on whether we maintain the institutions that enable criticism: universities that protect academic freedom, markets that reward innovation, legal systems that protect dissent, cultures that value evidence over authority. These institutions are fragile, since anti-rational memes constantly evolve to undermine them, and movements that demand conformity, forbid questioning, and punish criticism are existential threats to dynamic societies.
The paradox is that dynamic societies create prosperity that enables anti-rational subcultures to flourish. Wealthy societies can afford to indulge ideas that don’t solve problems, universities can tolerate departments that produce no knowledge, and governments can fund programs that achieve nothing. The slack created by past innovation enables present stagnation. This can’t continue indefinitely, since eventually the anti-rational memes dominate, institutions stop creating knowledge, society becomes static, and when the next crisis emerges—climate change, pandemic, resource scarcity, war—the static society can’t adapt.
This is what happened to Easter Island. The culture that built those incredible statues was sophisticated, with engineering knowledge, organizational capacity, and artistic vision, and it was static. When the environment changed, the culture couldn’t, and the people enacted their traditions until they starved. The same could happen to us, not because we lack resources or because geography dooms us, but because we allow anti-rational memes to suppress the criticism needed to create knowledge.
The Choice
The lesson from Iceland and Easter Island isn’t that geography doesn’t matter but that geography only matters after ideas determine how to exploit or overcome it. Iceland faced terrible geography and the society created knowledge—legal institutions, trade networks, literacy, adaptive strategies—that enabled survival and eventual flourishing. Easter Island faced better geography and the society was static and couldn’t create the knowledge needed to solve the deforestation problem, leading to collapse.
The difference wasn’t the environment. It was the ability to generate new knowledge.
Diamond was right that geography influenced development, and wrong to treat it as deterministic, since ideas determine which geographic factors matter and how societies respond to them. Deutsch is right that good explanations drive progress: societies that figure out how to create and test new knowledge can solve any problem, while societies that suppress criticism and enforce conformity eventually collapse. Understanding this determines how we address every challenge from climate change to economic growth to technological innovation. Do we treat these as resource problems requiring rationing, or as knowledge problems requiring innovation? Do we create institutions that protect criticism and reward problem-solving, or do we enforce conformity and punish dissent? Do we build a dynamic society that can adapt to anything, or do we slide back into static-society stagnation?
The future isn’t written by geography. It’s written with ideas. We get to choose whether those ideas are good explanations that solve problems or anti-rational memes that suppress criticism, whether we build the institutions that enable infinite knowledge creation or the structures that crush creativity, and whether we choose the beginning of infinity or the extinction of the last tree.
Iceland proved that humans can thrive anywhere with the right ideas. Easter Island proved that humans can destroy themselves anywhere without them.
Geography shaped the stage. Ideas write the script.
